Congratulations! IM Dr. John Webster of Stoneville, NC for winning the 2014
Alabama State & District 5 Open Checker Tournament. |
Congratulations! CM Albert Tucker from Minden, LA as the 2014 District 5
Champion and Larry Pollard of Brilliant, AL as the 2014 Alabama State
Champion. Larry continues to dominate Alabama State Checker by winning
this Championship Title which makes his sixteenth time. |
Congratulations! Teal Stanley of Greensboro, NC who finished in 2nd place and Lynn
Steelman from Crandall, GA in 3rd place, tying with CM Albert
Tucker in the Master's Round-Robin. | Congratulations! Frank Davis and Larry Pollard
who tied for 5th
place. | Congratulations! Ken Shultz from Cosby, TN
who
won the Majors Division
and recognized as our 2014 District 5 Majors Champion.
- Larry Pollard - Tournament Director / Frank and Mary Davis as Referee and Scorekeeper. Frank opened the tournament by asking Larry Pollard to give our
opening tournament invocation. In the business meeting that followed, Larry welcomed 13
players as: 3 each from North Carolina, Georgia,
and Tennessee, 2 from Alabama and one each from Louisiana and Kentucky. We decided to
play a Round-Robin with 8 Masters and a Round-Robin with the 5 Majors as two
divisions. The Majors had two additional rounds of Swiss as their last two
rounds. Frank covered rules and how overtime would be handled so rounds would
stay on a two hour schedule. We voted to play seven rounds of Round-Robin for both divisions. 2 game per round of 1
hours per game, 5 rounds Friday and 2 rounds Saturday. Starting at 8:00 AM
Saturday.
- We also recognized the death of two players who usually attended this
tournament, Roy Harben from Guys, TN and Clifford Daniels from Preston, MS.
-
We also discussed the need to bid the 2015 GAYP National. There were
pledges form the majority of Master players in an effort to meet the bid if
Frank Davis would sponsor and direct the National in Lebanon at Comfort Suites
on 904 Murfreesboro Road. They have a large meeting room that will accommodate
72 players. This is the ideal venue because the location is nearest where most
of our tournament players live. Frank has
already contracted with Comfort Suites - Lebanon to hold 2015 TN State and
the 2015 Southern there. The $70 room price includes the playing room if we book
12 rooms by their deadline before the tournament date. This is a nice place with all
the amenities! You actually have a choice if you want to stay at Comfort
Suites or across I-40 at Econo Lodge for $50, we still get credit. Both hotels are owned by the same person and both are equally nice but Comfort
has the nicest meeting room and amenities. Nobody has a deal like this that offers this quality of venue at this price
that includes as large of a meeting room, and a centralized location. Both hotels have undergone recent
renovations and improvements. All we need to do is get the word out that
Checkers has the ideal Tournament Venue for a NATIONAL!
-
This annual “Alabama State & Fifth District Open Event makes the 9th continuous year at the Galley Restaurant in Haleyville, which has a suitable meeting room. Galley
is the town's social and business hub for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Haleyville Civitans meet there every Tuesday, others like the Lions, Rotary
Club, Business & Professional Women's Club, Riding for Christian Motorcyclists
Association, Haleyville Bass Anglers, etc. also meet there.
-
Several local and area merchants donated money, food, and prizes.
-
The Total Cash Prize: $1,360.00 = Entry
Fees $260 ($20x13) + contributions & donations. We appreciate Joe
McDaniel contributing to our tournament.
-
John Gibson shared a large checker scrapbook of his, which included many
newspaper and magazine articles about checker playing and checker tournaments.
I saw pictures of player who have long passed on, and what many players looked
like 40 years ago. This is a must see item, I'm hoping John will let me
put some of it on the internet to his credit. Beckwith was a young boy, and
Joe Schwartz was a handsome gent!
- ACF
Ratings are processed by Joe Moore using the ICF Checkers' rating system, as
darker blue being your rating after this tournament.
- Big
"Thank You" to Larry, his daughter Kelly for the delicious, buffet deli trays,
drinks, & bottle water through out the tournament and all others who had a part in making this an excellent tournament.
- This was
a well run tournament and everyone enjoyed the friendship and competitive
checker playing.
